Trade union leaders suspect foul play, seek action against the accused The relay hunger strike tent at the Gandhi statue, near the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), set up to protest against the move to privatise Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), was gutted in a fire at around 5 a.m. on Sunday. The fire was brought under control by the fire service personnel. The cause of the fire is not yet known. Police reached the spot and gathered details. Alleging that it was the handiwork of some anti-social elements, leaders of various trade unions demanded action by the police against the accused. The JAC was formed for protection of VSP and it was established at a roundtable held at the CITU Office here on Wednesday. The roundtable decided to take out a massive rally and organise a public meet in the city on February 18. The participants said they would involve all sections to save the steel plant, which was achieved after 32 persons lost their lives in the agitation and farmers gave 22,000 acres of their land for the establishment of the plant. The plant was providing employment to 35,000 persons directly and another 65,000 persons indirectly. ....

A protest was organised by CITU at Gandhi Statue near the GVMC office on Wednesday seeking justice for the workers of Krishnapatnam port. Addressing the gathering, CITU city general secretary M. Jaggu Naidu said that the farmers of Nellore district had given away 4,553 acres of land for the establishment of the port in hopes of getting jobs at the port.
