Hoops Preview: Nebraska 2023-24 #1

THE ESSENTIALS WHAT #97 Michigan (8-14, 3-9 B10) vs #52 Nebraska (16-8, 6-7 B10) WHERE Champions Circle Arena Lincoln, NE WHEN Saturday, 6:30 PM THE LINE Kenpom: Neb-7 Torvik: Neb-7 TELEVISION BTN (link) THE OVERVIEW Well whaddaya know, Michigan won a basketball game. Over a top-11 opponent and the projected top three-seed no less. Granted it was the most fraudulent Wisconsin team in a minute, but if our stink's gonna rub off on someone this year, nobody deserves it more than the Badgers. Doing the same to Nebraska would be ruder, and surprisingly more far-fetched. The Huskers are currently just on the good side of the bubble. They don't travel well; a recent overtime loss to Illinois was the closest the Huskers have come this season to a Big Ten road win. At home howevever they've taken out Wisconsin, Ohio State, Northwestern, Indiana, Michigan State, Kansas State, Indiana, and Purdue(!), which victory is probably what's holding them in the tournament. Michigan 87, Illinois 91

This game could have been any in the first half of the season. There was lackadaisical offensive rebounding, missed assignments on defense, freshmen turning good possessions into fadeaway long twos, wingers picking up ticky-tack fouls, and Hunter Dickinson setting up way too high in the post. This game also could have been any in their resurgent February. Michigan corrected its mistakes on the fly, contested the rim with its lineup of two bigs, cycled into drawing three charges (could have been five), found buckets from a more aggressive Dickinson in the paint, fixed a dislocated finger, and erased a late deficit to put themselves in position to win a desperately needed Q1 road game in the Big Ten. This game also could have been academic, had Michigan admissions found their way to letting Terrance Shannon finish a few credits of his Texas Tech degree on campus. Illinois, like every other D-I university in America, had no issues. Michigan, like every team without a wing eraser like Shan ....

PORTAL PORTAL PORTAL: SO MUCH PORTAL!

So this is unprecedented. As of writing this Michigan has already brought in five transfers in the week since the portal opened. They are widely expected to be adding a sixth in Indiana TE AJ Barner. What is going on? Did something change? Did we become the new Portal U? Well, I thought we should talk about it. PORTAL? Much of what Brian went through last week is still true. Zach Shaw of 247 wrote a comprehensive assessment of Michigan's needs yesterday that isn't behind a paywall so I'll just point you to that. Updates by position, with some additional scouting thoughts: Cornerback: There are a lot of names out there and very little to suggest Michigan is making any headway with them. They're facing elite competition for Virginia's Fentrell Cypress, who's made visits to FSU and UCLA and "doesn't talk much about Ohio State" it may be he's looking to go somewhere warm. UNC's Tony Grimes, whom Michigan recruited hard out of high scho ....

Michigan 83 Lipscomb 75

Hanging onto a just-reacquired 1-point lead with two-and-a-half minutes remaining, Dug McDaniel got the ball on an inbound. He tried going off a screen but his defender went under it. He went left but the paint was packed. He went up, the ball went down, and Michigan survived another one of those games. While Lipscomb came in with a reputation for playing up or down to their opponents, Michigan's own reputation for that is now in stone, after needing to overcome a 4-point deficit to the #205-ranked Bisons late in 2nd half. While the flow was different this time Michigan held a double-digit lead for big chunks of the game the how was similar to difficulties they had against EMU (#301) and Ohio (#194): unserious early rotations, bad defense, and most distressingly, some clear holes in a very unsettled rotation. Even with Lipscomb back-cutting them to ribbons early, Jett Howard was taking advantage of a huge size difference to keep up, and it felt like Michigan only needed someone ....
