The call came in just before 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 27, 1974. “I believe there might be a dead person . on the beach . across from Ulloa Street, if you follow the street right down to the water,” the caller told a San Francisco police dispatcher. Didn’t give his name, just hung up. Cops rushed down to Ocean Beach. Sprawled at the water’s edge, about to be washed out by the waves, was a man’s body. They dragged him back onto dry sand and took a close look. Seemed to be about 50 years old. Balding, heavy-set. Seventeen stab wounds, front and back, including on his hands he’d tried to fight off his killer. ....
