UK covid inquiry: Scotland's infection control and care home policies face scrutiny

This week, the inquiry turned its attention to the devolved nations, starting with Scotland. Jacqui Wise reports on some of the key takeaways Jane Morrison, lead member for the campaign group Covid Bereaved Scotland, told the inquiry how her wife died five days after contracting covid in hospital. Morrison said 25% of the group, which represents grieving families in Scotland, lost someone because of nosocomial infection. She told the inquiry that one of the group’s members was allowed to wander around Hairmyres hospital in East Kilbride after testing positive for covid. “This makes a mockery of infection control, it’s like pulling down a portcullis to stop a swarm of bees.” Giving evidence on 17 January, Morrisson said families had “pleaded” with hospital bosses not to release their loved ones to free up NHS beds. Women scientists educate the world on suppressing virus variants –

Dr. Kirsty Short, a virologist and senior lecturer at “Recent phase 2/3 data from both Novavax and Johnson & Johnson suggest reduced protection against the South African variant,” Dr. Short reports. “The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine group also released data suggesting its vaccine offers only minimal protection against mild-moderate disease caused by this variant.” “It’s important to recognize ‘reduced protection’ doesn’t mean no protection at all, and that data are still emerging” and “What’s more, numerous vaccine manufacturers are now investigating whether tweaks to the vaccines can improve their performance against the emerging variants,” added Dr. Short.
