Finn's Law passed to increase prison sentences | This Is Local London


A new law has been passed meaning anyone who injures a police animal could spend up to five years in prison.
Previously the term was a maximum of six months, but following a campaign led by PC Dave Wardell of the Beds, Cambs and Herts Dog Unit, the Animal Welfare Sentencing Bill has now upped the punishment.
The bill, also known as Finn’s Law part 2, comes after a police dog named Finn almost died from injuries sustained on duty in 2017.
PC Wardell said: “This has been a long and emotional journey over a number of years but all of the work has been absolutely worth it in support of all amazing service animals who are put in harm’s way on a daily basis. ....

Bedfordshire police officer 'trapped in burning car' returns to work

A police officer who thought his time was up when he became trapped in a burning patrol car is celebrating his return to full-time work.
PC Ben Gates received 12 fractured ribs, a cracked sternum, a shattered vertebra and five fractures to his right leg after crashing on the A1(M) in Hertfordshire in June 2019.
Since then he has undergone extensive rehabilitation and had two operations.
Nobody thought I would ever return to work, said the 27-year-old.
My goal was always to get back to front-line policing and especially roads policing. I m excited. ....

Greater Manchester Police to be given £1.8m to tackle serious crime with 'targeted action'

GREATER Manchester Police (GMP) is set to receive more than £1.8m to crack down on serious crime with targeted action .
The Home Office will hand £1,862,000 to the force to tackle serious crime in the region, which may be used in certain areas to increase patrols, carry out weapon sweeps or for stop and search activity among other operational work.
The money comes in addition to the £3.37m that will be given to the Greater Manchester Violence Reduction Unit, which was announced last month.
The fund is part of a £130.5m package the government is setting aside to tackle serious violent crime – including murder and knife crime – in the next year. ....
