Covid-19 vaccine should be mandatory for health workers, expert says


University of Otago epidemiologist Michael Baker said there was a strong argument to make the vaccine mandatory for frontline health workers.
“Health care workers internationally are more vulnerable to exposure to Covid-19, and they have a higher mortality level than the rest of the population because of that.”

Professor Michael Baker is coronavirus expert with a special interest in pandemics. He says there is a strong case to make the Covid-19 vaccination mandatory for frontline health staff.
The vaccination was another form of protection, similar to PPE, for health staff, he said.
Baker said he expected DHBs to know the proportion of staff vaccinated. ....

Canterbury’s health board chairman and Māori health providers have welcomed the Government’s plan to abolish all 20 district health boards (DHBs) and replace them with a central agency.
But a local board member has branded the changes “terrifying” and “undemocratic”.
Health Minister Andrew Little took the sector by surprise on Wednesday when he announced all 20 DHBs and all 30 public health organisations will be abolished as part of a health system shake-up. ....

Canterbury Charity Hospital founder Phil Bagshaw has welcomed the Government’s plan to overhaul the health system as “aspirationally correct” – but warns the Ministry of Health needs reforming too.
Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) chairman Sir John Hansen and Māori health providers have welcomed the plan to replace DHBs with a central agency.
Bagshaw, who was both an appointed and elected member of the CDHB from 2000 to 20004, said he thinks of the period as “the wasted years” in an undemocratic bureaucracy. ....
