January 23, 2021 7:00 am Three Roscommon teens who restored a 1956 Ferguson 20 tractor and raffled it to raise money for Childhood Cancer Foundation Ireland have scooped the Connacht Electric Ireland GAA Minor Special Recognition Award. Strokestown GAA’s Jack Beirne and Andrew Jordan and St. Barry’s GFC member, Mark Rodgers, won the award for their outstanding efforts in raising over €60,000 for the Childhood Cancer Foundation. Jack is a childhood survivor of leukaemia and benefitted from the Childhood Cancer Foundation’s services. As part of a Transition Year project, Jack, Andrew and Mark purchased the vintage tractor with the plan of restoring and selling it, with the proceeds going to the charity which provides vital ....

The three 16 year olds are in Transition Year and they chose Childhood Cancer Foundation Ireland as the beneficiary because one of the team, Jack, was diagnosed with childhood leukaemia when he was three years old. “I spent three and a half years going up and down to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin for chemotherapy and to say that life was not what every child would wish for during those years is an understatement.” “However, with all the love, support and help of both the medical professionals and most importantly my family, friends and community, I am one of the lucky ones.
