How alternative festivals became platforms for conspiracy theorists


Because Covid denial and medical misinformation are rife at wellness festivals, the upcoming NZ Spirit Festival, featuring Rachel Hunter, had help from anti-conspiracy campaigners to send a clear message to its presenters. Anke Richter explains.
This autumn equinox, Earth Beat – “Aotearoa’s most innovative and earth-friendly music and arts festival” – held a five-day party at Ātiu Creek to “balance the light and dark”. On the Saturday night, that balance flipped. Matiu Te Huki, a popular performer on the hippie festival circuit, played after midnight. Instead of bantering between his songs, the Wellington musician used the main stage for an anti-vax speech. Some people in the crowd responded to his passionate warnings about “poisoning our bodies” and a “plandemic” with cheers and clapping. Others were appalled.  ....

Chch community hub used by dozens of groups may close if lease not renewed

Phillipstown Community Centre Charitable Trust manager Dr Viviana Zanetti is concerned about what will happen to the community facility when the current lease expires in December.
The future of a community hub on the site of an earthquake-damaged Christchurch school remains uncertain as its lease comes up for renewal.
Ten organisations and 45 casual groups use the Phillipstown Community Hub on Nursery Rd, which opened six years ago. About 850 people attended classes, social activities, health and fitness programmes and support meetings there each week.
Phillipstown Community Centre Charitable Trust leases the site and manages the various rooms and outdoor spaces. It pays costs but is not required to pay rent to the Ministry of Education. ....
