Kati Kariko Helped Shield the World From the Coronavirus

She grew up in Hungary, daughter of a butcher. She decided she wanted to be a scientist, although she had never met one. She moved to the United States in her 20s, but for decades never found a permanent position, instead clinging to the fringes of academia.

STAMFORD, Conn., April 1, 2021 /PRNewswire/ ReneSola Ltd ( ReneSola Power or the Company ) (www.renesolapower.com) (NYSE: SOL), a leading fully integrated solar project developer, today announced that it closed the sale of a portfolio of projects originally disclosed on January 8, 2021. The projects are in Hungary and were sold to Obton, a leading international solar investment company headquartered in Aarhus, Denmark. The sale closed on March 19, 2021.
The portfolio comprises 20 solar plants in five locations, including Sárbogárd, Kömlöd, Szajol, Lukacshaza, and Törökszentmiklós, with a combined capacity of 12.3 MW. These 20 solar projects, which were successfully connected to the grid in 2020, are now in operation and are qualified under the Hungarian 25-year KAT feed-in tariff scheme.
Hungarian physicians have to sign a new contract by the end of this week to be able to continue working in public care after March 1st. Under the new agreement, the base salary of doctors will increase significantly, but there might be a major setback in the additional benefits, so much so that for some it could fully negate the promised pay increase. As a result, employees of several hospitals across the country seem to be rejecting the contract, endangering the proper functioning of the healthcare system.
Major wage hike for doctors but only with strict conditions
Parliament approved the bill of a major wage hike for physicians last October. The new law grants a 120% salary increase to doctors in Hungary in three steps, reaching its maximum in January 2023. The law also criminalizes gratuities offered as bribes and sets a limit on the value of non-cash gifts from patients to doctors at five percent of the monthly minimum wage.

The buyer is a global leader in the meat business, the U.S.-based company Smithfield Foods.
An earlier version of this story read that Smithfield Foods is an American company. The company, founded in the USA in the 1930s, was in fact bought by Hong Kong-based WH Group in 2013.
Both sides agreed that the sum of the transaction will not be made public and the transaction will be concluded once the respective authorities in Slovakia and Hungary approve it.
