Stadium to Reopen to Fans Saturday, March 6

Share
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:
There are very few things more uniquely Orange than attending an event at our iconic stadium. This is an experience many of us have been missing throughout the pandemic. For that reason, we are pleased to share that late last night the University and New York State came to an agreement that will allow us to reopen the stadium to a limited number of fans, starting first with our students.
As a result, Syracuse University will become the first major college sports arena in New York State to “pilot” a reopening plan, when we welcome up to 900 students (beginning with students who are season ticket holders) at Saturday’s men’s lacrosse game against the University of Vermont. ....

'Make 'Garage-Gate' Matter' | Syracuse University News

J. Michael Haynie
Haynie recently spoke with Lauren Schellin, a member of the Wisconsin Army National Guard. Over the past six months, Schellin has experienced the loss of four members of her National Guard unit to suicide. While Schellin’s story may sound shocking, Haynie says that as a veteran and veteran advocate himself, he has heard of far too many similar experiences amongst families struggling with “the epidemic of suicide among service members and veterans.”
Several years ago Haynie gave a TED Talk called “The Moral Obligation to Know Our Veterans,” where he encouraged all people to truly get to know veterans and military families. “Too often military service has the effect of socially isolating those who serve from their families, friends and communities. Sometimes that isolation comes at a traumatic cost,” writes Haynie. ....

IVMF Advisory Board Welcomes New Additions

Share
The Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) has announced two new members to its advisory board with the appointments of Mark Elliott, global head of military and veterans affairs for JPMorgan Chase IVMF’s founding partner and Ken Fisher, co-managing partner of Fisher Brothers.  Elliott will work with Daniel A. D’Aniello ’68, cofounder and chairman of the Carlyle Group, and replaces former JPMorgan Chase executive David Owen as IVMF Board co-chair.
“As we proudly welcome Mark and Ken to the IVMF Advisory Board, we thank David Owen for his tireless service and dedication,” says Vice Chancellor J. Michael Haynie, the IVMF’s executive director and founder. “Mark’s appointment speaks to the continued longtime support of our founding partner, JP Morgan Chase. His leadership of the firm’s military and veteran affairs division ideally positions him to help further elevate IVMF’s influence and impact in the veteran support ecosystem. An ....

'Trust the Process' with COVID Vaccine, Emergency Management Director Says

Trust the process.
As a 16-year member of the United States Air Force Reserve and now in his job as director of emergency management and business continuity at the University, Joseph Hernon has always followed that philosophy.
And that’s why Hernon, a master sergeant in the New York Air National Guard, did not hesitate to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine when it was offered last month to nearly 1,000 New York National Guard soldiers and airmen who are military emergency responders.
“The big thing that I’ve always carried with me is, when it’s my opportunity, trust in the science and trust in the process and if this is what keeps us moving forward, that’s what we need to do,” Hernon says. “The science is behind us and this is how we’re going to win this war, with science and data. ....
