Balloon Juice | COVID-19 Coronavirus Updates: Wednesday/Thursday, Feb. 24-25

Yesterday I caught some of Virginia Governor Ralph Northam’s Covid briefing and news conference. He reviewed progress on vaccination, emphasizing that we are at a critical phase in combatting the disease and that it was no time to let our guard down. Northam also pointed out that 500,000 Virginians have been diagnosed with Covid-19 (he is one of them), and an estimated 500,000 have had the disease and did not know it. This is out of a population of about 8.5 million. On the relative merits of different vaccines, Northam said “the best vaccine is the one you get.”
I’ve noticed that masking and other social distancing measures have increased in my rural county. Masking at the Ruckersville Walmart is nearly 100%, up from 85-90% in the fall. Covid-19 has pretty much gotten everywhere now, and seeing is believing. ....

HEALTH CARE BRIEFING: Two-Dose Crunch Complicates Full Immunity

February 22, 2021 6:09 AM
By Brandon Lee
Nearly a month after U.S. vaccination campaigns ramped up to give Covid-19 shots to more than a million people a day, their second doses are coming due, straining state rollouts and leaving some without complete immunizations.
In Texas alone, almost 6,000 people were overdue for their second shots in early February. In Washington state, health officials said last week that some mass vaccination clinics would be delivering follow-up doses only. A Michigan hospital system canceled last-dose appointments for the past week after its supply was reduced.
“All I have on hand is enough to get me through today and tomorrow,” Carolyn Wilson, chief operating officer of Beaumont Health system in Michigan, said in an interview. ....

Juicy sirloin steaks hot off a 3D printer are on the menu this year as the booming faux meat market bids to lure even die-hard carnivores.
Israel’s Redefine Meat is targeting steak houses and other restaurants in Israel, Europe and Asia with its 3D-printed facsimiles of beef cuts, from fillet to rump and brisket. The start-up has just raised US$29-million in funding to build a large-scale pilot factory and begin sales later this year, it said on Tuesday.
“We want to change the belief that delicious meat can only come from animals,” CEO Eshchar Ben-Shitrit said. “We have all the building blocks in place to make this a reality.” ....

What does normal mean in a year like 2020? For the
state of Israel, surprisingly even by COVID-19 standards, it means
the establishment of formal political, diplomatic and economic
ties, through the signing of the Abraham Accords Peace Agreement,
with the Kingdom of Bahrain (Bahrain) and the United Arab Emirates
(UAE), with other countries in the region that may follow
suit.
The signing of the Accords, in addition to spurring a wave of
new and expanded business opportunities in the Middle East and
North Africa (MENA) region, has the added effect of normalizing the ....
