Watercraft certification class June 16


A watercraft certification class will be offered in Grand Rapids for youth between the ages of 12 and 18. Each course will include a two-hour classroom session and an on-the-lake operating session. Youth will operate outboard motors and personal watercraft.
The course will be held on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. All registered students will need to arrive at the classroom by 8:45am. The classroom is located at the Itasca County Sheriff’s Department classroom at the Itasca County Court House. After completing the classroom requirements, the students will be taken to Tioga Beach for lunch and the hands-on portion of the training. Please bring a mask for COVID restrictions. ....

April 19, 1911-The St. Paul Mine in Keewatin opened; the Roberts and Platt mines in Nashwauk also opened for the season.

April 20, 1921-Good progress is being made for improved highway construction in Itasca County. Clearing was started on the Blackberry to Warba route.
April 20, 1921-A recount for the mayorship of Keewatin ended in a tie vote. The issue will be settled in court. The two candidates are Dr. A.C. Kean and George Matakovich. ....

Policing the Rapids: Mask up, wash up and get vaccinated


Recently, I was speaking with a friend who is a local physician. I was lamenting about how this time of year is a bit less busy in police work, which is a good thing, but it makes it difficult to find material to share in this newspaper column. “What should I write about?” I asked.  She responded without hesitation, “Mask up, wash up and get vaccinated.” I guess that is very sound advice for all of us. Of course, she is right. We all need to do our part in ending this pandemic so that life can return to some semblance of normal.  ....
