Berrettini beats Djokovic conqueror Karatsev to win Belgrade final


(MENAFN - Gulf Times) Italy s Matteo Berrettini won his fourth career title yesterday defeating Aslan Karatsev, who had stunned Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals, in the Belgrade clay court final.
The 25-year-old Berrettini, the world number 10, triumphed 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (0) over the Russian who was seeking his second title of 2021 after winning in Dubai.
Berrettini won previous titles at Gstaad in 2018 and Stuttgart and Budapest, both in 2019.
On Saturday, the 28th-ranked Karatsev had knocked out world number one Djokovic in the semi-final, saving 23 of 28 break points.
This title is for my family, this is the first time that they are actually here to see me win the trophy even though it s my fourth one, Berrettini said at the trophy ceremony. ....

The Uffizi Gallery in Florence used the winter Covid shutdown to push ahead with renovations, discovering lost frescoes that will greet visitors when the leading repository of Italian Renaissance art reopens on May 4.
Uffizi director Eike Schmidt said the six months of closure were put to good use: renovating 14 new rooms that will open to the public next month, and discovering frescoes that would otherwise have remained hidden.
But he hopes that the most recent reopening the third during the pandemic will be the last. ....

Canberra is considering co-funding a A$1 billion ($1.07b) biopharmaceutical plant to reduce its dependence on imports of critical medicines in the wake of Italy s decision to block a shipment of Covid-19 vaccine to Australia.
