An old-new term returned this week to the debate on the Iran threat: “nuclear threshold state.” According to military correspondent Gili Cohen of the Kan state broadcaster, Israel’s defense and foreign ministers recently cautioned their American counterparts that Iran was nearing threshold status.
Similarly, according to a survey drawn up for President Isaac Herzog by the Institute of National Security Studies, Iran seeks to become a threshold state and reduce the time required for a “breakthrough” – the actual manufacture of nuclear weapons.
