Going into the first leg a couple weeks ago, I thought the Timbers had a chance to make some noise and win a game at home. The 1-1 draw was a little disappointing, but at least I could take some solace in the fact that we kept it close. As I said in last week’s column, we proved we could hang with the big boys. ....

There was a second half full of craziness with Diego Valeri missing a penalty, Raul Ruidiaz scoring a penalty, and Bill Tuiloma scoring an incredible free kick in stoppage time. Ruidiaz scored again at a stage that would’ve made the game 3-0 but he was fractionally offside. The Sounders take on the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday night. The last few years it has sometimes seemed as if every time the Seattle Sounders played at the Portland Timbers that they were doing it on short rest. The Timbers fell 3-1 in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals Wednesday in Mexico City for a 4-2 aggregate loss, knocking them out of the tournament. The quarterfinal finish was the Timbers’ best ever in the prestigious competition, and now the Philadelphia Union remain as the only MLS team to reach this year’s semifinals. ....
