[Caleb Kingwara, Standard] Floods in Nyanza and Lake Victoria backflow have caused havoc in the region, displacing thousands of people, destroying properties, and hindering learning in some schools. Thousands of traders suffered a setback after a 41-year old bridge connecting Homa Bay and Migori counties collapsed. More than 2, 200 families in Nyatike, Migori County have been affected by floods following heavy rains. At Kakelo Kakoth Location, some 300 homes were submerged in water forcing locals to flee for safety. [Denish Ochieng, Standard] Thirteen-year-old Clinton Onyango is a troubled boy. He has no place to call home after their house in Kajowi village, Nyando, Kisumu County, was swept away by floods in February last year. The family lost everything during the incident. And as if that is not enough, the same floods raided Onyango’s Ogenya Primary School and destroyed classrooms. Roofs and walls of some of the classrooms were completely destroyed making resumption of school a major nightmare for the school management. ....

[Omondi Onyango, Standard] As parents and pupils made final touches in readiness for the start of the second term, a spot check by The Standard showed that there was a state of unpreparedness in several parts of the country. In Embulbul Primary School, in Ngong, Kajiado County, the board of management and parents were organising a fundraiser to put up temporary classrooms to ensure learners observe the social distancing measures. Board chairman Hamisi Ramadhani said the school had more than 1,500 pupils and needed more than Sh13 million for the project. ....
