The clapper report, which is the collection of the intelligence service s report on what was going on in the election at that time. that report was primarily about concerns over russian meddling in election processes here and in europe. but at some point that concern about russian meddling or morphed into making donald trump himself the target of the media s investigation. how did that happen. paul: what i m going to be looking for, bill, is whether mueller has a narrative that connects a lot of the disparate facts that we know about ties between russians and trump. so the trump tower meeting, for example, the papadopoulos meeting with some russians, the jeff sessions meeting with the russian ambassador. there are various little dots on a map, but none of them go anywhere right. paul: by themselves. do they add up to anything, that s what i m looking for. that s what i m looking for. look, to dan s point, when this was coming out, you know, ....
Back when nunes was the chairman of the intelligence committee, was asking for this information that doj agreed to turn over about this underlying stuff. he said, you are setting a precedent. i m going to use it when we are in power. that s what we are seeing. one thing to note is that bill barr might not have the final word. adam schiff has said they intend to call robert mueller. executive privilege is something that a witness or government can assert to withhold information. if mueller decides that he wants to testify about something, executive privilege is not something that prevent him from testifying if he chooses to do so. one thing to look for is whether mueller feels satisfied that the information that he thinks is important for the american people to know and for congress to know is actually getting out. if not, he will have an opportunity to testify his own story and his own conclusions in front of congress. i know you are working your sources. what else are you hearing? w ....
Now what we have to see is whether mueller is going to see whether or not anyone here cooperate pd with that effort. . he has not yet signalled an interest in dieting anyone on that. it may be that the evidence doesn t support it. but we have yet to see what his conclusion is with respect to that cooperation. so i think that s what s still ongoing with respect to this aspect of the counterintelligence investigation. i know you and others in the legal community have talked about how you start wide and narrow down. this indictment did come three days before his meeting with putin. do you think mueller purposefully timed this release? well, mueller reported to rod rosenstein when the grand jury was going to be ready to make the indictment. and i think that between the two of them they zoided that we re just going to go forward on normal time schedule, which was to release it as it was released. rosenstein briefed the president before it was released. ....
trump told his aides he was, quote, especially disturbed after learning mueller would be able to access several years of his tax returns. the washington post reporting trump has resisted enormous pressure to keep his tax returns private. that s his choice. what we look at is whether mueller had the authority to get trump s taxes and how soon he could get them. there is good and bad news here for trump. the good news is in general the law does support his secretive approach to his taxes. taxes are private under federal law. leaking them is a felony that could land you in prison for five years. the bad news for trump is that all changed once this criminal investigation began. if the irs suspects crimes relating to tax fraud, the irs can send the tax returns to the chief tax prosecutor, the justice department, for investigation. now, that post is currently held by david hubert, seen here testifying before congress just last month. if there s no tax crime suspected but the tax returns ....
