A massive search operation is underway in Indonesia to find the wreckage of a Sriwijaya Air plane that crashed into the sea shortly after takeoff from the capital Jakarta on Saturday with 62 people on board.
Sriwijaya Air flight 182 a Boeing 737-500 was heading from Jakarta to the city of Pontianak, on the Indonesian island of Borneo, when it lost contact at 2:40 p.m. local time (2:40 a.m. ET), 11 nautical miles north of Jakarta’s Soekarno–Hatta International Airport. Four minutes into the flight, and amid heavy rains, the plane dropped 10,000 feet in less than a minute before disappearing from the radar, according to the global flight tracking service Flightradar24. ....

Officials Believe Indonesia Airplane Crashed Shortly After Take Off

A Sriwijaya Air plane carrying 62 passengers is believed to have crashed shortly after taking flight, Indonesia s Head Of National Transportation Safety Committee, Suryanto Cahyono, reported to CNN. 
Sriwijaya Air flight 182 was flying from Jakarta to Indonesian Borneo when it lost contact around 2:40 a.m. ET on Saturday. The plane was carrying 50 passengers and 12 crew members, all of whom were Indonesian nationals. Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi told the media that officials believe the plane crashed between the islands of Laki and Lancang in the Thousand Islands chain northwest of Jakarta. Sumadi also confirmed that a dozen vessels including four Indonesian Navy warships were deployed as part of a search-and-rescue mission for the plane.  ....

BANGKOK A passenger jet carrying more than 60 people crashed into the Java Sea on Saturday, minutes after taking off from the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, Indonesian officials said, bringing renewed attention to a nation long cursed by aviation disasters.
The fate of the plane, a Boeing 737-500, also carried the potential to ensnare the troubled American aviation giant in more bad publicity, even though the cause of the crash had yet to be determined.
Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry said that the last contact with the plane, Sriwijaya Air Flight 182, was at 2:40 p.m. local time. The plane was bound for the city of Pontianak on the island of Borneo. It had 62 people aboard, according to the Transportation Ministry. Boeing Co (NYSE: BA) plane that departed from the Indonesian capital of Jakarta crashed shortly after takeoff with 62 people on board.
What Happened: The Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737, flight number SJY 182 headed to the Indonesian city of Pontianak, lost contact on Saturday at 2:40 p.m. Western Indonesian Standard Time, according to Indonesia s Antara News Agency. That s 2:40 a.m. Saturday morning Eastern Standard Time in the U.S.
The plane reportedly crashed near an island about 20 kilometers from the airport. Debris was reportedly spotted on nearby Lancang Island. 
Search operations are underway.
Sriwijaya Airlines CEO Jefferson Irwin Jauwena told press that the plane was in good condition before it took off. ....
