NORTH SMITHFIELD – A Clark University professor working to quantify the amount of solar development in Rhode Island found that 740 acres have been developed for solar power, nearly half of it on previously forested land.
John Rogan is a geography professor in the Worcester university’s Graduate School of Geography. His previous work includes mapping elephants in Africa and mining installations in Peru. ....

Green Development preps for next phase on Iron Mine Hill Road

NORTH SMITHFIELD – Green Development is making progress on its 160-acre solar farm off Iron Mine Hill Road and expects to begin installing solar panels within the next two months.
Green Development Spokesperson Bill Fischer told The Valley Breeze last week that site work is now 95 percent complete on the property, which encompasses a former junkyard and wooded area between Route 146 and Greenville Road. The next step, he said, is to install racking, followed by approximately 122,000 solar panels. ....

Septic tank issues delay concession stand at NSHS

NORTH SMITHFIELD – Students and parents at North Smithfield schools will have to wait a little longer for a long-awaited concession stand and bathroom facility at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The project, negotiated as part of the town’s agreement with Green Development for approval for their solar farm on Iron Mine Hill Road, has been delayed due to high levels of nitrogen in the property’s existing septic system. Kevin Morin, director of project development and engineering for the company, briefed the Town Council on the project’s status this week.
“It’s basically a biological process, having the right components,” he told members during a meeting on Tuesday. ....
