A Tralee teenager has avoided a conviction for a tirade of racist online abuse of former Arsenal football star Ian Wright.
Patrick O Brien (18) had the Probation Act applied as Judge David Waters told Tralee District Court that the material sent over social media by the teen was clearly racist, reprehensible and utterly abhorrent.
However, the judge said he was satisfied they were not views held by the teen - but rather unthinking comments designed to cause hurt and passed in the heat of the moment by a young, immature and naive person.
Judge Waters also said that the Tralee teenager should be thankful for the generous attitude of the footballer who said he had forgiven him. ....

A Tralee teenager who admitted sending racist and crass messages to former footballer Ian Wright will not receive a criminal conviction.
Instead, he has received the benefit of the Probation Act.
18-year-old Patrick O’Brien of 8 Sycamore Court, Ashleigh Downs, Tralee had pleaded guilty to two charges in relation to the matter.
At Tralee District Court, Judge David Waters said that he didn’t see that anything could be gained by imposing a criminal conviction on Patrick O’Brien who had sent the abusive messages on Instagram to the former England and Arsenal footballer, Ian Wright.
He made the decision after hearing from the teenager’s solicitor, Pat Mann, that Mr O’Connell had taken his own initiative and donated â¬500 to an anti-racism charity, the Irish Network Against Racism. ....

A teenager from County Kerry in Ireland has avoided a criminal conviction over sending abusive messages on social media to Arsenal and England legend Ian Wright last year.
The 18-year-old, named as Patrick O’Brien, decided to send the private messages to Wright on Instagram after he had lost a game of FIFA on the Playstation.

Irish news outlet The Journal reports that O’Brien had pleaded guilty to two charge, one of harassment that goes against Ireland’s Non-Fatal Offences Against The Person Act of 1997, and another of sending a message by phone that was grossly offensive, obscene and menacing. ....
