Indian Embassy’s festival delights Urdu lovers in Saudi Arabia By News Desk| Published: 14th March 2021 7:22 pm IST Jeddah: The Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the New Delhi-based National Council for the Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) have announced an international Urdu conference to be held in Saudi Arabia. The Indian ambassador to the Kingdom, Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, and the council’s president, Dr. Aqeel Ahmed Sheikh, made the announcement during the two-day virtual Urdu festival, Jashn-e-Urdu, that was broadcast live in Saudi Arabia. Sheikh said that the NCPUL is committed to work for the promotion and development of Urdu wherever possible. It is ready to extend full support and cooperation for any activity promoting Urdu, even in foreign countries. The ambassador said that the grand international Urdu conference would be held in Saudi Arabia in cooperation with the NCPUL after the lifting of restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic. ....

Hundreds of thousands of working farmers are maintaining their protests around the Indian capital, New Delhi, determined to roll back laws aimed at crushing their livelihoods. The measures passed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government would end state-guaranteed minimum prices for staple crops. They come after farmers’ incomes have declined for years, forcing many into deepening debt. Up to 300,000 farmers are organized at the protest sites by nearly 400 farm organizations. This is the largest protest against the Indian government in decades and the biggest opposition Modi has faced since coming into office. ....

On November 26, when hundreds of farmers marched towards national capital in protest against three new agriculture laws, 50-year-old Jafri was among them. When the Delhi police shut down the city’s borders, he spent 17 days camping at the Singhu border between Haryana and Delhi with 200 other farmers from his village in Madhya Pradesh’s Raisen district. “During that time, locals opened up their homes to us, Sikh groups gave us free langar food, and we had a chance to meet farmers from all over India,” said Jafri, a wheat, rice and soyabean farmer who heads a local agricultural organisation – Kisan Jagruti Sangathan – in his district. ....
