Russia continued its post-Cold War decline in 2020 and covid19 played a minor role. The space program continued to shrink with fewer satellites put into orbit. Defense production is still unable to replace older Cold War systems before those pre-19911 ships, tanks and warplanes wore out. The economy continues to be crippled by low oil prices and economic sanctions imposed for the war against Ukraine. That conflict began in 2014 and has been stalemated since 2015. The ceasefire down there is regularly broken by Russian forces whose artillery and machine-gun fire causes dozens of casualties a month on both sides because the Ukrainians usually fire back. The foreign military efforts in Syria and Libya are done on the cheap but still cost Russian more than it can afford. Introduction
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sparked rage in Iran recently by quoting a popular Azeri poem; his recitation was perceived in Iran as an insult and a provocation against Iran s sovereignty and territorial integrity. On December 10, during his participation in the Azerbaijan victory celebrations over the liberation of Nagorno-Karabakh from Armenia, he recited, in Turkish, a line from the Azeri poem Aras : They tore the Aras [River] and filled it with rocks and sticks / I will not be separated from you. They have separated us forcibly, he said. The poem laments the division of the Azeri provinces between the Persian Qajar Empire and Czarist Russia in the early 19th century. On November 10th, Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a ceasefire agreement that ended a six-week war over territories claimed by both sides.
The war resulted in a clear victory for Azerbaijan.
Under the Russian-brokered agreement, most of the territory that Armenia captured during the previous war in the 1990s was returned to Azerbaijan by November 25th.
The original source of the conflict, the
