Iowa Democrats face a rocky road ahead as the party looks to rebuild after another election cycle that saw Republicans expand their control over the state lawmaking process and the loss of its first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses.

A leader poised for the position is rural Iowan C.J. Petersen, the chair of the Iowa Democratic Party’s Stonewall Caucus, a leader on LGBTQ issues, and the former communications director for U.S. Senate
The bill requires the federal government to recognize marriages regardless of the sex and race of the couple. It does not require states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
