'Why?' Ukrainian army faces criticism for making women march in heels

The official pictures aimed to display the next generation of the Ukrainian army: Dozens of female cadets marching in their fatigues and high heels, before a parade next month honouring the country’s 30th anniversary of independence.

But after a flurry of angry responses from lawmakers, a demonstration in front of the Ministry of Defence and sceptical feedback from the cadets this past week, the Ukrainian military changed its position on the footwear, acknowledging the challenges of marching in heels. ....

Ukrainian soldiers made to march in high heels during military parade


Ukraine s defence ministry caused outrage on Friday after it published pictures of female soldiers rehearsing for an upcoming military parade wearing high heels.
In the pictures, the female students of a military college are seen wearing military fatigues and black heeled shoes, which even the cadets themselves admit are impractical.
Today we are training in high heels for the first time. It is a little more difficult than in combat boots but we are doing our best, Ivanna Medvid told ArmiaInform, the news agency of the ministry.
The images sparked anger online in Ukraine and protests in the country parliament, ....
