The highest-ever Covid-19 case counts were reported in Marin over the past two weeks, signaling more trouble is on the way for local hospitals even before Christmastime transmission has been detected. The stress on Marin’s hospitals lessened this week, but the dip in admissions is likely short-term. On Tuesday, 24 patients with Covid-19 were hospitalized, down from a peak of 35 two weeks ago, while 26 of 29 beds in intensive care units were occupied, an improvement from the maxed-out capacity on Dec. 15. Dr. Matt Willis, the public health officer for Marin, said when hospitals reach capacity, fatal outcomes become more likely. Kaiser Permanente has already canceled elective surgeries through Jan. 4 at all of its Northern California hospitals; Novato Community Hospital and the MarinHealth Medical Center have not yet announced a change, but medical directors have said they would reduce worker-to-patient ratios and reassign sta ....

There’s good news and there’s bad news about Covid-19 this week. The good news is that testing efforts are finally expanding in West Marin, and a group of first responders were vaccinated in Point Reyes Station on Wednesday. The bad news is that this week saw the largest number of positive test results of the pandemic, and Marin’s intensive care units are approaching capacity, potentially resulting in more fatal outcomes.
The pandemic’s three highest days for positive tests occurred in the last week, peaking at 103 new cases last Wednesday. For every 100 positive tests, public health officials predict another five to 10 people will go to the hospital, three patients will go to the I.C.U., and one or two people will die. ....

A health care worker at a nursing home in Marin is set to be vaccinated for Covid-19 today, an important milestone in the fight against the coronavirus that has infected at least 107 people in West Marin and upended nearly every aspect of life. Although the first vaccine is a beacon of hope, it will be months before shots are widely available, particularly on the coast, where cases are surging.
Pfizer’s initial shipment of 1,950 doses is destined for hospital staff and health care workers at Marin’s 13 skilled nursing homes, where deadly outbreaks have been triggered by employees travelling between facilities. Next week, Marin is expecting to receive a repeat shipment, plus another 3,000 doses from Moderna, the second vaccine producer awaiting emergency authorization. These doses will go toward remaining hospital staff and first responders, including active volunteer firefighters. Then, the rest of the county’s healt ....
