UAE's solar aluminum gets first customer—BMW

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the world’s biggest “premium aluminum” producer and the largest industrial company in the UAE outside oil and gas, has announced that BMW Group is the first customer for EGA’s CelestiAL aluminum, made with the power of the desert sun.
EGA has supplied metal to BMW Group since 2013 for use in the German carmaker’s engines and other parts. EGA will supply 43,000 tons of CelestiAL aluminum to BMW Group per year.
Using solar aluminum from EGA will reduce BMW Group’s CO2 emissions by 222,000 tons per year.
BMW Group’s annual supply contract with EGA is worth a three-digit million-dollar sum. EGA’s CelestiAL metal will cover almost half the annual requirements of Plant Landshut, the BMW Group’s only production facility for light metal casting in Europe. UAE global first to make aluminium using solar power
DUBAI, January 19, 2021
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) and Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) have announced that the UAE has become the first country in the world to produce aluminium using the power of the sun.
Under an agreement signed today, Dewa will supply EGA’s smelter with solar power from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, reported Emirates news agency

The milestone supports the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the most sustainable city in the world and become a global leader in the development and application of scientific and technological advances in the energy sector. ....

Emirates turns to solar to smelt aluminium

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) have signed an agreement under which DEWA will supply EGA’s aluminium smelter with solar power.
DEWA will supply EGA’s smelter with 560,000 megawatt hours of solar power annually from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, sufficient to make 40,000 tonnes of aluminium in the first year with the potential for significant expansion.
EGA’s sourcing of solar power from Dubai’s electricity grid will be tracked and traced through the use of the International Renewable Energy Certification System, ensuring that the energy used to produce EGA’s CelestiAL solar aluminium has been sourced from the sun. ....
