Aspiring teacher stuggles with oppression and being a woke Asian – AsAmNews

I entered the teacher preparation program thinking that I was one of the few people on this earth who possessed a critical consciousness á la Paulo Freire, a leading advocate of critical teaching. This was a result of my work with Karen teenagers in Ithaca, NY, the Karen being an ethnic group persecuted in Burma, of which many resettled in the United States.
Over the course of two years, I worked with them in brainstorming, designing and finally painting a mural that represented their community. The lessons I learned from this grassroots work were invaluable. I will use an oft-quoted phrase to sum up what I took away from the experience: “nothing about us without us.” The teenagers were front and center in the project, and as an employee of the 4H Urban Outreach Program, my job was to be a facilitator. ....

Holmes is an accomplished educator and leader in identifying and managing the complex trends in student campus life and higher education. He joined the Division of Student Affairs as the associate vice president and Dean of Students in 2017 and oversees judicial affairs, Greek affairs, campus chaplains, crisis management, and student-community relations. Holmes holds a doctorate in educational leadership and administration from the University of Texas at El Paso, a master’s degree in counseling and personnel services from the University of Maryland-College Park, and a master’s degree in bilingual/bicultural studies from La Salle University. ....

Utica College Joins National Coalition of Liberal Arts Institutions to Examine Race, Equity on Campus

Utica College has joined a prestigious coalition of colleges and universities across the country, formed to examine race and equity on college campuses. The Liberal Arts College Racial Equity Leadership Alliance (LACRELA) has been created to foster greater understanding in combating these issues.
Developed by Shaun Harper, Race and Equity Center executive director at the University of Southern California (USC), LACRELA seeks to help professionals at colleges develop and achieve equity goals, better understand and correct problems, avoid and recover from racial incidents, and foster sustainable cultures of inclusion. ....
