larry: really? absolutely. are you kidding? i mean, we have enormous deficits, huge trade deficit, people feel frustrated. larry: the anger. absolutely, larry. i completely understand that, you bet. and none of us should presume that you can just sort of oppose things and have a strategy of obstruction and not suffer consequences. i think the american people sent us here to do a serious job and we need to get it done. there are real answers to these things. this is not as complicated as some people want to make it. there are ways of reducing health care costs. maybe we can t go quite as far, as fast to reach as many people who don t have the insurance, but we could have insurance reforms. we could stop having people lose their insurance the minute they get sick. we could stop having people lose their not get insurance because of a pre-existing condition. we can do a more effective job of paying and reimbursing and ....
What i have said is that both the house bill and the senate bill were 90% there, 10% of each bill, people had some problems with and legitimately so, so we were just about to clean those up and then massachusetts election happened. suddenly everybody says oh, no. it s over. well, no, it s not over. we just have to make sure that we move methodically and that the american people understand exactly what s in the bill, and what i ve done is i ve said to the republicans show me what you ve got. you ve been sitting on the sidelines criticizing what we re proposing. i m happy to defend insurance reforms. i m happy to defend the fact ....
The white house and freedom caucus are getting close to a deal on health care. is that the case? i think that s pretty accurate description. i m not sure we re there yet, but i think we re getting pretty close. the latest iteration will certainly drive down premium costs. again, that s what we held out for a few weeks ago when the bill first didn t come to the floor. we thought it didn t bring down premiums enough. i think this iteration probably will. is that because it does not mandate insurance companies to provide some of those basic health benefits that obamacare required? oh, no. not at all. what it does, it establishes high risk pools like the risk-sharing pools which basically take the highest risk patients into separate pools, lowering the cost for everyone else. all right. we re talking about the mcarthur amendment proposed by tom mcarthur of new jersey, allowing states to seek waivers to weaken some of the obamacare insurance reforms, including preexisting conditions ....
