Doctor who uncovered Flint water crisis to deliver keynote address
KINGSTON — The University of Rhode Island has chosen Mona Hanna-Attisha, the Michigan doctor responsible for uncovering the Flint water crisis, to deliver the keynote address at this year’s commencement.

The switch, which was made in 2014, resulted in toxic lead contamination and coinciding outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease.
According to President David M. Dooley, her remarks and the bestowing of an honorary degree upon her “could not come at a more important time.” ....

Michael J. Dowling hails from Limerick and yet he is virtually unknown by the people of this city and county. He has been overlooked by the media in Ireland and is better known in the USA. Time to put that right, I think! ....

Alabama Senate approves bill that will protect minors from dangers of transgender therapy

Senators voted 23-4 in favor of the bill sponsored by Republican Senator Shay Shelnutt called the Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act. The bill is now headed to the state House of Representatives, which has already approved a companion bill.
The bill, as well as the one already approved by Alabama representatives, would make it a felony for medical professionals to treat transgender minors under the age of 19 with gender-affirming care. Violators could face up to 10 years in prison or a $15,000 fine. School staff in the state would also be required to disclose to parents that “a minor’s perception of his or her gender is inconsistent with his or her sex.” ....

Vitamin D is important to the health of every system in the body, and yet many people do not get the recommended amount. “Many, many Americans almost half are vitamin D deficient,” says David O. Meltzer, MD, PhD, the chief of hospital medicine at University of Chicago Medicine. “But we know that in excess of three quarters of people with darker skin, including African Americans and Hispanics, are vitamin D deficient.”
Now a new spotlight has been trained on that racial gap, with emerging research into possible associations between vitamin D deficiency and the risk of serious COVID-19 disease, including a study led by Dr. Meltzer. Celebrities such as Tyler Perry and Angela Bassett have joined a chorus of voices seeking to publicize these potential links. Meanwhile, other research suggests that current standard ....
