Nobles’ extensive responsibilities as chancellor will entail tending to the welfare of students, supporting them, raising funds on their behalf, framing strategy, handling admission matters, addressing sexual harassment affairs and misconduct concerns, in addition to addressing other matters such as learning. “As educators, we want to teach the whole student,” Nobles said in the MIT announcement. “At MIT, you shouldn’t hide your interests. We say to students, ‘Be your whole self.” Additionally, Noble will supervise the vice chancellor and vice president and MIT’s dean for student life. The Institute Discrimination and Harassment Response (IDHR) office and the MindHandHeart initiative will also come under the scope of Noble’s responsibility. ....

Following a sabbatical leave, she’ll return to teaching and research. At MIT, the chancellor has responsibility for “all things students”: graduate and undergraduate education, student life, student services, and other areas that affect the student experience. In sharing the news of Chancellor Barnhart’s decision, President Reif wrote that he has launched a search to fill the role. During her seven years at the post, Barnhart and her team took a range of actions to make MIT a more caring environment where support is easier to find. She oversaw an expansion of student health and wellness programs, launched a campaign to prevent and respond to sexual misconduct on campus, and focused on new efforts to enhance undergraduate and graduate education. “From the start, she has been a fearless advocate for student wellbeing, a calm, insistent force for new thinking and creative change, and one of my most trusted and thoughtful advisors,” Reif wrote to the community. ....
