Furious German farmers have been protesting since mid-January against new regulations in the draft of the so-called Insect Protection Act, introduced by Angela Merkel s government. A few days ago the Federal Cabinet in Berlin approved the drafts for the act and to amendments to the Plant Protection Application Ordinance. ....

New German insect protection legislation draws a sharp divide


Farmers always say that they care about the environment, while environmental protection organisations demand ever stricter regulations for the agricultural industry. With Germany’s new insect protection law, the conflicts of interest between the two groups have reached a new peak. EURACTIV Germany reports.
On Wednesday (10 February), the German government is due to vote on the draft of a new insect protection law.
However, the road ahead is still strewn with hurdles, which have embroiled the two ministries concerned in a deep dispute. For months, environment minister Svenja Schulze (SPD) and agriculture minister Julia Klöckner (CDU) have been discussing the new insect protection legislative package both internally and publicly. ....

German cabinet fails to reach an agreement on insect protection


Due to continuing divisions between the Agriculture and Environmental Ministries, the German government was unable to reach an agreement on the draft of a Insect Protection Act (ISG) on Wednesday (16 December). EURACTIV Germany reports.
Passed by the cabinet in September 2019, Germany’s “Action Programme for Insect Protection” envisioned a complete ban on glyphosates by the end of 2023 with a “systematic reduction strategy” in place for 2020.
However, deep disagreements between Julia Klöckner’s Agriculture Ministry (BMEL) and Svenja Schulze’s Environment Ministry (BMU) have pushed the negotiations into 2021, after the two failed to reach an agreement on a common draft during Wednesday’s cabinet meeting.  ....
