Normally a gentle trickle, the drain became a raging torrent of water on the afternoon of May 20. Shortly after the emergency evacuation of our home, the river broke through the windows of our basement that evening, immersing all of its contents in a 7 1/2-foot deluge from upstream dam failures. The following evening, we kayaked down Partridge Lane to our front door and peered into the windows, grateful that no water was evident on the main floor. The stairwell leading to our basement was dark with murky water, just inches from the landing of our main level. The following day, we were able to drive to our home and survey the muddy tangle of cabinets, rugs, boxes, photos, and tools, turned upside down by the force of the flood. As we stood dazed ....
