Latest COVID developments 'staggering,' Cohen says


New COVID-19 cases continued to break records locally and across the state last week with Pitt County Schools seeing its highest number of school-affected cases yet and the county recording its 59th death on Friday.
The state court system also will halt all non-essential in-person proceedings for 30 days starting Monday, Chief Justice Cheri Beasley announced as 7,540 new COVID-19 cases were reported across the state.
Friday’s total surpassed the previous one-day high of 6,495 cases recorded just two days earlier on Wednesday, a development state Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mandy Cohen called “staggering and alarming.”
“We are now seeing the impact of Thanksgiving gatherings,” Cohen said. “Do not wait until it is you or your loved one sick or alone in the hospital or you are facing the loss of a loved one to wear a mask, wait 6 feet apart, and wash your hands often.
