good morning, sir. good morning. ..it was the chancellor who took to the airwaves to try and reassure the public that the government had matters under control. welcome back to the studio, chancellor. appearing on the laura kuenssberg programme, mr hunt said ministers would do whatever was necessary to keep schoolchildren safe. we will spend what it takes to sort out this problem as quickly as possible. so do you commit to covering whatever costs are required to remove all of this dangerous concrete from schools around the country? we will spend what it takes to make sure that children can go to school safely, yes. the chancellor has insisted the government acted fast when the dangers of school ceilings unexpectedly falling on children came to light, but did they? injuly 2018, a staff room ceiling suddenly collapsed at a primary school in kent, and crumbling raac beams were blamed. in december of that year, the government warned every school authority to beware the dangers. in
thanks to the presence of this, raac. a lightweight concrete used in the 50s, 60s and 70s but now often in a state of serious disrepair. it is a problem that has been known about for years. five years ago, a primary school building in kent collapsed, leading to wider concerns. good morning, sir. so the questions of many parents are now asking of government, why act only now, just days before the start of the new school year in england? we went through this exhaustive survey of 22,000 schools after the initial incident in 2018. then in the summer months, new information came to light that suggested that some of the buildings that had previously been classified as safe might not be. and so the education secretary acted immediately on that. the chancellor said the government would spend whatever it takes to keep children safe at school, although it is not clear what that means in the long term. labour is piling on the pressure, demanding action. first, i am calling on the govern

[ speaking in a foreign language ] this house came to be built by dr. blake. who was in the east india company service my grandfather came to be nominated to the council of state which used to be a part of british india. it was another time, one that few still remember. the india before partition, when these rooms, this house, was part of the seat of power. i had the privilege of being born in this house upstairs. this was the maharajah s bed. his chambers are present. we went up to my grandfather s room to wish him good morning and we would all come down to breakfast. the walls tell a story. many stories. there used to be a lot of animosity. there were two very divided classes in india so there was a lot of tension between the ruled and the rulers. but that was a different time, you know. now i think back and it s more like a fairy tale. day one in northern india near the pakistan border.
in one school, i have ten rooms and a staff room i cannot use. my second school 16 rooms, the gymnasium and some toilets. and in my third school, 12 rooms. so, you can see it s quite considerable. but it s notjust schools. other public buildings are also affected, like harrow crown court, which could be shut for months. and 2a hospital sites, like hitchin brook hospital in huntington, also have weak concrete. they are spending millions on surveys about what is safe, and what is not, and millions in mitigationjust to keep the building safe and open. and so, this is a really big challenge, and frankly, any building mainly built with raac is past its sell by date, and will need to be replaced, so there is a very big bill for the taxpayer. this is the aerated concrete used in buildings in the 1960s, 70s and 80s that is causing so much concern. we don t really know the scale of the problem. there is no central record. although individual government departments are being requir
