Ethiopian election expected to deepen rifts | Africa | DW

Ethiopian election expected to deepen rifts
Ethiopians will vote in June to elect a new parliament. But voter registration is patchy, and opposition parties plan to boycott the ballot. Experts fear that simmering ethnic tensions will escalate.
Fears are growing of more violence spurred on by elections
On June 5, Ethiopians will elect a new parliament, as well as regional and municipal councils. The polls were originally scheduled to take place on August 29 last year but were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Peaceful elections seem increasingly unlikely in this conflict-ravaged East African nation, where more than 80 nationalities and ethnic groups reside and unresolved grievances persist.  ....

Tigray crisis dents Ethiopia′s emerging image | NRS-Import | DW

Tigray crisis dents Ethiopia s emerging image
Fighting continues in Ethiopia, despite Ethiopia s premier Abiy Ahmed declaring victory over Tigrayan rebels in November 2020. With elections on the horizon, has the war in Tigray done more damage to Ethiopia s unity?
The blunt comments by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the worsening humanitarian and human rights crisis in Ethiopia, and his references to an impending disaster  in Tigray are a rude awakening for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed s government.
Ahmed declared victory over the Tigrayan People s Liberation Front (TPLF) in late November 2020. But six months later, the conflict is still going on, with the TPLF reportedly entrenching themselves and turning the conflict into a guerilla war. Eritrean troops, which Abiy belatedly admitted, were operating on Ethiopia s soil and reportedly sometimes wearing Ethiopian army uniforms, have still not left Tigray. TheUN says there is no sign of them leaving, either. ....

US doubles aid to Tigray | News | DW

US doubles aid to Tigray
The US said large-scale assistance is urgently needed in order to prevent the humanitarian situation in Tigray from worsening. The area has seen a violent conflict for several months.
The Tigray conflict has forced millions from their homes
The United States said Thursday that it would provide another $152 million (€128 million) to the Tigray region of Ethiopia in the wake of ongoing fighting and potential famine.
The aid will come through the US Agency for International Development (USAID). It will double the amount of funding that the US provides to the Tigray region in the East African nation. The organization said the funds will address life-threatening hunger and acute malnutrition, as well as provide safe drinking water, urgently needed medical and health support, and shelter for some of the estimated one million people who have fled their homes. ....

Talks collapse on Ethiopia′s Nile dam | News | DW

The dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam
Grave concerns downstream
However, the other parties remain uncertain over the GERD. Egypt fears the dam will endanger its supplies of Nile water, while Sudan is concerned about the dam s safety and water flows through its own dams and water stations.
Egypt had said this latest meeting represented the last chance to re-start negotiations before Ethiopia begins to fill the dam for the second year in a row, after seasonal rains begin this summer.
Ahead of the latest round of talks, Egypt s President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi said there would be inconceivable instability in the region if his country s water supply were affected by the dam. ....
