On Wednesday s Backchat we re looking at how Hong Kong is doing in reviving its tourism industry. Tour groups have returned to the SAR after quarantine-free travel was resumed with the mainland, but residents in Hung Hom and To Kwa Wan are now complaining about crowded streets, noise and litter left by visitors joining so-called “budget tours”. The executive director of the Travel Industry Authority, Annie Fonda, says the current situation isn’t ideal, and stakeholders are working to find a solution. Overall, latest figures show that some 1.46 million tourists came to Hong Kong last month, more than eighty percent of them from the mainland. This is triple the number from January, but is still two-thirds down from pre-pandemic levels.
