Device could be key to discovering cause of Indonesia airline crash that killed 62 passengers in Java Sea.
SHOW TRANSCRIPT
It s one of two flight recorders crucial to determining the cause of the crash.
The plane took off from Jakarta Saturday with 62 people on board before nosediving into the Java Sea.
Officials said the cockpit voice recorder is emitting signals in the same area and could be located soon.
systems that differentiate this aircraft from prior models. the flight manual is inadequate, almost criminally insufficient. all airlines that operate the max must insist that boeing incorporate all systems in their manuals. that s dated november, 2018, one month after the indonesian crash. boeing has said since that time it has updated its manuals and that there s been additional training that s been given to pie lts. but it still shows that pilots in this country have reported control issues similar to the ones that seem to be coming out of the investigations both with the indonesian crash and then the one over the weekend with ethiopian airlines. there are now 40 countries, including the european union, china, and australia that have a banned this aircraft flying in their airspace. despite the complaints of lawmakers and concerns of aation unions and the fears of the fly public, the plane continues to fly here.
the boeing 787 max. they include morocco, china, indonesia, those two are big, china and indonesia, mongolia, not a big country there. ethiopia just had the crash, and cayman airways grounding its two 737 maxes. we have a list of north american airlines that fly the 737 max, and there s two variation tz of this, the maximum 8 and the maximum 8, and the maxim 8 is t one involved in the indonesian crash. they include air canada, as well as american, southwest, west jet up in canada, as well as sun wing, united airlines flies the 737 max 9, which is essentially a longer version of the max 8. every airline that we ve talked to in the states believes that these are good aircraft. they are standing behind their aircraft. but they are watching this investigation very closely. the concern is that if there are any similarities between the crash in ethiopia and the crash
in, of course, indonesia, then you might see many more countries moving to ground this plane. but we don t know that yet. we don t know if what brought down the plane in indonesia, which was a cascading series of issues, the computer that was faulty pushing the nose down while the pilots tried to pull the nose up, we don t know if that s what brought down the ethiopian plane. that is going to be a top priority as investigators begin looking at the black boxes. the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder. the minute they get any read on those black borxes, you can imagine airlines around the world want to know. is there something they need to be aware of and something they need to tell their pilots. that s another thing you look at when there is a crash. this is a pilot correct me if i m wrong, who had quite a few hours and ethiopia has a good track record. one of the good ones in
there was a need to override the system and a mechanism to override the system. so the preliminary findings from the indonesian crash, the indonesian crash, i want to stress is there was a bad sensor or the sensor providing bad data to the computer, the onboard flight computer suggesting that the plane was going to stall and so the plane s computers automatically put the nose down to pick up speed, but the pilots were not aware of this new automated system and they tried to pull up on the nose and they were fighting the computer that was pushing the nose down. there was a way to disengage that system and the pilots didn t know that this system existed and they re fighting a system that they may understood. you simply disengage the automatic trim. however, if you are in an emergency situation you re not that high up in altitude, suddenly the nose is pointing towards the ocean and you re panicking, a lot of airline pilots have said to me, listen, i m not even sure that i would
