55 year old Michigan author's debut novel receives national attention

A novel written by Michigan author Angeline Boulley was in the works for about 10 years before receiving an unexpected level of success.
As a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, Boulley said she first got the idea for her young adult thriller,
Firekeeper s Daughter, from her own experiences, at the age of 18.
I didn t anticipate that it would take 10 years, she said. I started writing when I was 44, and then I was 54 when I got an agent, and sold the book at auction.
Firekeeper s Daughter was released in March. It tells the story of an 18-year-old biracial, unenrolled tribal member named Daunis Fontaine who tries to stay true to her Anishinaabe heritage while working undercover in an FBI investigation of a new drug that is harming her Ojibwe community.  ....

Ojibwe author Angeline Boulley on the "Indigenous Nancy Drew" story in her debut YA thriller

Stateside s conversation with Angeline Boulley
Angeline Boulley’s debut young adult novel opens with a heart-pounding scene: a girl stands frozen in the woods, staring down the barrel of a gun.
Over the course of the book, Michigan author Boulley revisits this dramatic scene, each time adding just a little more context and gradually unraveling the novel’s mystery. The result is an elegantly-paced, emotionally complex thriller called
Firekeeper’s Daughter. It’s making a splash with teen and adult audiences alike and it hasn’t even hit the shelves yet.
