A well-known Indiana County farmer and nursery owner has passed away.
Charles Altemus of Penn Run passed away on Monday. He started farming at the age of 16. Later in life, he along with his wife Mildred owned and operated Altemus Farms and Pike’s Peak Nurseries. The farming operation was one of the largest in the region, with farm lands in Indiana, Westmoreland and Cambria Counties. In 1998, he received the inaugural Hugh E. Cumming Cooperative Award for significant contributions to the agriculture industry.
Altemus was active on several boards, including the Indiana County Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Committee, was a member of the board of directors for the Indiana Healthcare Corporation, and was an advisory member for the S&T Bank Board of Directors.
