Coronavirus in India: Bucks County community sends aid to homeland


More than 1,000 oxygen concentrators are being shipped to India to help with the pandemic crisis there, thanks to the efforts of the Council of Indian Organizations of Greater Philadelphia.
The lifesaving devices are among many supplies that people of Indian heritage and others in the Delaware Valley have provided to India in recent weeks.
Paresh Birla, of Lower Makefield, is council president and, as such, is directing the work to help people in his native land where variants of the coronavirus have emerged in the past two months, causing scores of infections and fatalities.  Medical supplies, particularly oxygen cannisters, have become scarce as the nation of 1.3 billion people grapples with the ongoing pandemic.  ....

They wouldn t have survived, Rani says, without help from the nine doctors in their family.
“This is a war,” Rani said. “Nothing less than a war.
That s why Indian American doctors like her can provide a lifeline, she says, as hospitals and health care workers struggle to keep up with the barrage of new cases. 
“It’s a very, very concerted effort that s going on from our medical faculty here,” said Dr. Anita Gupta, who does research at the IU School of Medicine and serves as communications chair at the Hindu Temple of Central Indiana. She too has been helping guide sick family members back home in a “collective effort,” alongside her husband, who s a doctor, and her sister in Chicago, who s a pharmacist. ....
