The Supreme Court of India has ruled against legalizing same-sex marriage in a 3:2 verdict. The court refused to strike down provisions of the Special Marriage Act that would include same-sex marriages, stating that it is the responsibility of the legislature to frame such laws. However, the court did grant several other rights to the LGBTQ community, including protection against discrimination, the right to choose a partner, the right to intimate association, and the right to adopt children.
Petitioners have agreed to submit their ideas and suggestions to be introduced administratively to a committee headed by Cabinet Secretary without prejudice to their rights.
