About 90% of private school staff vaccinated as unions urge teachers to be 'vaccine ambassadors'

According to independent schools associations, about 90% of teachers and staff from private schools have been vaccinated.
The associations say they are happy with the way the Department of Basic Education accommodated their teachers during the vaccine drive. 
The education sector will conclude its vaccination drive at the end of the week. 
While independent school associations say they are pleased with the Covid-19 vaccination drive for its members, the five teacher unions in the Education Labour Relations Council have urged their members to be ambassadors of the vaccine.
South African Democratic Teachers Union, National Professional Teachers Organisation of South Africa, South African Teachers Union (SAOU), Professional Educators Union and National Teachers Union have urged teachers and support staff in the sector to use the remaining days of the vaccination drive to get the jab. ....

Curro schools will continue to provide face-to-face learning next week despite the government announcement on Friday that the reopening of schools has been postponed until February 15.
Curro, the country’s largest private education provider, operated 177 schools last year.
In her announcement on Friday, deputy basic education minister Makgabo Reginah Mhaule said the decision to delay the new term because of surging Covid-19 infections “includes private schools that have reopened already. They will need to postpone their reopening to a later date.” ....

DBE delays reopening of schools by 2 weeks amid Covid-19 second wave

Cape Town - With the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic hitting South Africa with over a million infection cases and more than 35 000 deaths, the Department of Basic Education announced it would be delaying the reopening of schools by two weeks.
South African public schools were scheduled to reopen on January 27 while most private schools had already kick-started their 2021 academic year.
“Due to the impact of the coronavirus, the Council of Education in conjunction with the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) and Cabinet have taken the decision to delay the reopening of schools to February 15, in order to provide relief to the healthcare system,” said Deputy Minister Regina Mhaule. ....
