Scots Spitfire veteran with royal connections celebrates milestone 100th birthday


RAF veteran John Addie Forrest celebrated his 100th birthday on April 13, 2021
IT has been on display at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum for the past 15 years and is a welcoming sight for visitors as they gaze up at the suspended Spitfire.
The MK21 Spitfire LA98 hangs above the main staircase after taking up permanent residence at the gallery from its previous home at the Glasgow Transport Museum. While the aircraft wasn t involved in the 1940 Battle of Britain defence of the skies against German forces, it featured in the film version bearing the same name.
And for RAF veteran John Forrest he has fond memories of flying that very aircraft when he was stationed at Abbotsinch Airfield, also once known as HMS Sanderling, at the end of the Second World War and now home to Glasgow Airport. ....

Castletown memorial decision
From the Groat of February 25, 1921
The committee formed to establish a war memorial in Castletown agreed to go ahead with a design in the shape of a cross, despite objections locally.
The decision had been postponed following a public meeting at which disquiet at the design had been expressed.
On the motion of Dr Macgregor, a vote was held which was carried by 16 to three in favour of the cross. ....

Deaths linked to coronavirus dare being investigated at more than 450 care homes across Scotland.
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) dedicated Covid-19 Death Investigation Team (CDIT) is currently looking into the circumstances of deaths in a total of 474 care homes throughout Scotland.
The CDIT was established last May, after Lord Advocate James Wolffe QC said all confirmed or suspected virus deaths in care homes must be reported to the crown, as well as the deaths of people who may have been infected with the virus at work. ....

An investigation has been launched into deaths at an Aberdeen care home, amid warnings that outbreaks in the Highlands should serve as a “harsh lesson” for locals.
It was yesterday confirmed that 11 residents at Rubislaw Park Care Home in Aberdeen have died of coronavirus.
A care home spokesman said: “Covid-19 has touched every corner of our society and sadly Rubislaw Park Care Home is no exception. ....
