The three-day event of Tobata Gion Oyamagasa (Kitakyushu City/ UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage) announced the cancelation of its highlight, “Pyramids of Light,” for 2021. The 300-year-old Hita Gion Festival (Hita City, Oita/ UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage) decided not to hold
yamaboko junko in July. Nagasaki Kunchi (Nagasaki City, Nagasaki/ Japan’s Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset) announced cancellations of the dedication of dance and the procession scheduled in October 2021. ....

This time a year ago, thousands gathered for Japan’s annual Hadaka Matsuri also popularly known as the “Naked Festival”– in Okayama prefecture in the southern part of Honshu island.
In today’s climate of social distancing, the video highlights from last year’s event (see above) are a surreal reminder of how much has changed since then.
Also known as Saidaiji Eyo, Hadaka Matsuri takes place on the third Saturday of February at the Saidaiji Kannonin Temple, about a 30-minute train ride from Okayama city. And this year was no exception. ....

This time last year, the Saidaiji Kannonin temple in Japan s Okayama prefecture was a writhing ball of flesh.
The Hadaka Matsuri or Naked Festival is a hugely popular attraction which sees thousands of men gathering from across the southern part of Honshu Island. On the third Saturday of February they are invited to strip down to a simple loincloth and join the fray to battle for holy sticks . The fertility festival has roots going back almost 1000 years. ....
