Service and engagement combine for spring 2021 Impact Week

Each semester, three student organizations go head-to-head to raise money for their service projects during Impact Week. Like the name suggests, these service projects are designed to have a positive impact on William & Mary and the Williamsburg community. To receive the $5,000 of prize money given by anonymous donors, the organizations encourage fellow students to vote for their project in the form of a $5 gift to any area of William & Mary. First place receives $2,500 towards their project, second place receives $1,500 and third place receives $1,000.
In this spring s Impact Week, from April 19-23, the three organizations that competed were Kappa Sigma, supporting the Williamsburg House of Mercy; InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, supporting 3e Restoration; and Greater City, also supporting 3e Restoration. ....

The largest anti-poverty agency in the area is celebrating the differences its 350 employees and 40 programs make for lower-income families living in Franklin and Hampshire counties by raising money during Impact Week, which ends Friday.
This year marks the 57th year since President Lyndon Johnson established more than 1,000 Community Action agencies to help fight poverty, according to Community Action Pioneer Valley Director of Communications and Development Jessye Deane. ....

Immigration & Entrepreneurship: A Conversation with Kim Luu-Ng, Human Rights Attorney and Co-owner of Cassia Restaurant

When Kim Luu-Ng and Bryant Ng opened Cassia in 2015, the Santa Monica restaurant was hailed as groundbreaking, with a menu that combined Vietnamese and French techniques in an approach the late Los Angeles Times food critic Jonathan Gold called “colonizing the colonizers.” Today, Cassia is widely recognized as one of the top restaurants in Los Angeles. Luu-Ng is also an attorney focused on the human rights of immigrants, drawing on her experience as a refugee from Vietnam to advocate for those seeking asylum in the U.S. In this Impact Week conversation, Luu-Ng will join Los Angeles Times columnist Frank Shyong to discuss her advocacy and entrepreneurship, and to highlight the importance of immigration to Southern California’s economy and culture. ....
