third shot for those who are severely immuno compromised. what does that actually translate to? who would be eligible? yeah, well, so these are people whose immune systems were compromised and weakened to the point that when they got the vaccine initially, they just didn t generate the same immune response as people who have, you know, healthy immune systems. so we get some indication of who this is likely to be. we can show you that, organ transplant recipients, they take medications to basically prevent their bodies from rejecting the organ. as a result their immune systems are compromised. they would certainly be on the list. but also other people who are similarly immuno compromised, people who recent chemotherapy, taking immune suppressing drugs for autoimmune disorders. they need to be very specific when we hear from the cdc later today as to who qualifies here. there are two points, erica. i want to show you the study that came out of the new england journal of medicine.
new lungs in a six-hour operation. they came from an adult, and i want to explain why that can be a challenge. you know, when you re the size of sarah, you just can t get lungs from a 6-foot-tall grown-up, for example. there simply isn t enough room. let me show you what i m talking about specifically here. what she had was a low bar lung transplant. so instead of taking the whole lung, they took the lobes, bottom lobes here and over here, and that actually is more reasonable in terms of trying to size that for someone who is much smaller. as with any transplant, you still run the risk of infection, the chance of rejection and all of the health problems that can occur when you re on immune-suppressing drugs. now, for the average lung recipient and this is always important stats to keep in mind there is a 50/50 chance that the patient survives five years later after that transplant. for a child like sarah, it s really hard to say. there s just very little experience with children he

life. yesterday sarah received a new set of lungs, lungs that came from an adult donors. doctors are pleased so far with her prognosis. we re joined this morning by chief medical correspondent dr. sanjay gupta. great to see you. thanks for being with us. now that she has received this lung transplant, what is the situation for sarah? well, you know, sort of three phases to it. the recovery over the next couple of days. you heard she is going to have the breathing tube and breathing machine for at least 48 hours for the short-term. she is going to start the medications to prevent rejections. these immune suppressing drugs and sort of be in the hospital for a period of time. and then after that, it s sort of the longer term recovery. how she s functioning at home. hopefully the new lungs will allow her to function and do things that little 10-year-old girls do much more easily. i will tell you, a tough opaeration and a tough recovery overall. if you take all lung transplants, 50% o
