The newly legislated three-day leave in Ontario has shone a much-needed light on an elephant in the room: sick leave.
As a small-business owner I can’t help but put my guard up when I hear the phrase “employers paying for sick days is their cost of doing business.” I think that there must be a solution that is fair for everyone.

As things stand now, the sick leave program will give employees three days of paid emergency leave during COVID-19 (retroactive from April 19 until Sept. 25). Employees who are sick, experience symptoms, have a mental health issue or need to be vaccinated can use these paid sick days and will receive up to $200 a day. Business owners pay the employees, then will be reimbursed through the Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB), for a total of $600 for three days ....
