Legislative update: Bills protect education and gun rights


It is May and we are still in legislative session. I hope that comes to an end next week. However, I do not want to Sine Die. Some say that means the legislature wouldn’t be able to comeback and conduct business. I don’t agree with that. I believe we have the authority to convene when we want. Nonetheless, many of us are trying to only adjourn so we may be able to come back, if needed.
I stated earlier during the legislative session that I was working on a bill to strengthen the nullification of federal gun control in Idaho. Then I was told the Idaho 2nd Amendment Alliance and Senator Christy Zito were working on this issue. Therefore, I got on board with them and I was set to be the House sponsor of the bill. Senator Zito could not get a hearing from the Senate State Affairs Chairwoman Patti Ann Lodge. Subsequently, she decided to get it going on the House side. Local students earn top honors at Idaho Science & Engineering Fairs


Local students earn top honors at Idaho Science & Engineering Fairs
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) - Hillcrest High School junior Lindsey Holtom earned Best of Fair at the 2021 Eastern Idaho Science and Engineering Fair. Her project was among 110 entries that 150 students statewide presented at the fifth annual Idaho Science & Engineering Fairs, which the Idaho STEM Action Center staged virtually throughout March.
Holtom s project, Developing Bacteria from Public Places, also earned EISEF s Best in Category in Biological, Earth, and Environmental Sciences, a Category Gold award, and a special award from the U.S. Air Force.
On top of earning serious bragging rights, Holtom and five other Best in Fair winners (one each from two other regions and three at-large winners) will represent Idaho at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in May. ....

Undergraduate student proposes new solution to lunar dust


When Ian Wells, sophomore mechanical engineering major, interviewed to join the WSU HYPER Lab in October 2019, he did not expect to be working on a project for NASA the next summer. 
Wells had an interest in space since he was a kid, when he spoke with an astronaut on the International Space Station. He said he took a class in high school through the Idaho Science and Aerospace Scholars Program. 
“I did well enough in this class, so I was invited to tour the NASA Ames Research Center,” he said. “While there, I realized that I could really pursue space science and engineering as a career.” ....
