Killer-herdsmen not militants, PANDEF, Ikponmwen, agitators denounce Gumi

By Emma Amaize, Regional Editor, South-South
PAN Niger- Delta Forum, PANDEF, former Provost Marshal, Nigerian Army, Brigadier-General Idada Ikponmwen (retd), agitators and other Niger Delta stakeholders, yesterday, upbraided Muslim cleric, Sheikh Gumi, over his claim that rampaging Fulani herdsmen were militants and not bandits.
National Publicity Secretary, PANDEF, Ken Robinson, said,  “It is unfortunate that the nation should be hearing one absurd statement or the other from this man, every day. It is high time that the media stopped giving him attention. He is nothing other than an eccentric bigot,  a paladin of marauders and murderers, dressed in cleric’s toga. ....

LATELY, there have been undercurrents from a number of  persons who feel Niger Delta militants have turned empty barrels, issuing threats all the time to blow up oil facilities while kidnappers, armed robbers and other criminals run riot in parts of the oil region.
Residents resentful of those they call “internet” militants, “laptop” and “newspaper” militants, who they accused of looking for settlement, dared them to confront the criminals terrorizing the people or stop disturbing their peace with endless sound of threats. ....

Clock of 2021: Issues that will shape Nigerian politics

Share
After the instability and varied gales of insecurity that plagued the country and dominated most political discourse in 2020, this year seems to offer a new leaf to all and sundry. IMOLEAYO OYEDEYI examines the likely issues that will shape politics in the country this year.
It is three days into the New Year, but the political storms that lingered all through the preceding year are still raging. The varied gale of insecurity, ranging from terrorism, kidnapping and banditry, tore at the nation and almost sank it in 2020. According to a former Provost Marshall of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Idada Ikponmwen, the different shades of insecurity that plagued the country last year were indicative that legitimate authority collapsed in the country despite being under the watch of a former military head of state, President Muhammadu Buhari. ....

Killings, kidnapping show legitimate authority has collapsed in Nigeria —Brig. General Ikponmwen

Former Provost Marshall of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Idada Ikponmwen speaks on the high rate of economic inequality and insecurity in the country, among others with HENDRIX OLIOMOGBE.

Are you not worried about the high rate of economic insecurity in the country as the gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ keep widening?
There’s no doubt about it that successive governments over the years since the return to civil democracy in 1999 have been unable to effectively address the issue of the economy. Nobody has been able to formulate progressive economic policies that will create employment and ensure that our dynamic youths who should be properly engaged in one economic activity or the other are gainfully employed. The result is that there is a lot of frustration among the youths. ....

Some Nigerian leaders, including Brigadier General Idada Ikponmwen now retired and Dr Kunle Olajide, General Secretary of Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), have decried the reign of terror in the country, just as a prominent Middle Belt leader, Professor Yusuf Turaki, has condemned the lackadaisical posture of state governors in the Northern part of Nigeria.
According to Professor Turaki, Boko Haram and other criminal elements have constituted themselves into authority and formed a government within a government.
Speaking to Sunday Tribune in Jos, Professor Turaki, who was one of the signatories to the document entitled: Notice of Constitutional Grievances Declaration of Constitutional Forces Majeure and Demand for Transitional Process for an Orderly Reconfiguration of the Constitutional Basis of the Federation of Nigeria, said bandits and terrorist groups in the North are gradually taking over the region. ....
