Is Automotive Ready for Hydrogen?

Is Automotive Ready for Hydrogen?
Mats W Lundberg, Head of Sustainability | Sandvik
With global sustainability legislations shifting the automotive market away from combustion engines, you’ve probably heard somebody utter “my next car will be electric”. If you haven’t, it’s likely you will soon. However, one fuel source doesn’t fit all. Making the green shift in the automotive market will require other sustainable fuel sources. Here Mats W Lundberg, head of sustainability at Sandvik, maps out the road towards hydrogen fuel.
The move away from petrol, diesel and hybrid cars can seem like a shifting target. Despite deadlines for the ban on such vehicles varying by country, we can be sure that global change is happening and soon. Automakers and drivers alike will need to adjust to a more sustainable future, but how can you decide which resource will power your vehicle? ....

European consortium forms to standardize fuel cell modules for heavy-duty applications: StaSHH

European consortium forms to standardize fuel cell modules for heavy-duty applications: StaSHH
A European consortium consisting of 25 organizations in the hydrogen sector has formed to define, develop and test the first European standard for fuel-cell modules for heavy-duty applications.
The consortium “StaSHH” (Standard-Sized Heavy-duty Hydrogen) comprises 11 fuel cell module suppliers, 9 original equipment manufacturers and 5 research, test, engineering and/or knowledge institutes. StaSHH will standardize physical dimensions, flow and digital interfaces, test protocols and safety requirements of the fuel cell modules that can be stacked and integrated in heavy duty applications like forklifts, buses, trucks, trains, ships, and construction equipment.
The consortium is receiving €7.5 million in funding from the European Union, through the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, in order to kickstart the adoption of fuel cells in the heavy duty sector. The to ....

Grexel, part of EEX Group, has been appointed by the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) as the operator and issuing body of the first European Guarantees of Origin (GO) market for green hydrogen, in the frame of the third phase of the CertifHy project.
The CertifHy project was initiated upon the request of the European Commission back in 2014. Undertaken by a consortium led by HINICIO and financed by the FCH JU, the CertifHy scheme has been bringing together stakeholders to develop a common European-wide certification scheme for renewable and non-renewable Hydrogen. Grexel will be part of a consortium of six companies (Hinicio, Grexel, Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik (LBST), TÜV SÜD, the Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB) and Commissariat à l énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA)) who have joined together for this third phase ....

Europe's truck giants to ditch diesel, as hydrogen's benefits come to fore – EURACTIV.com

Seven major truck manufacturers pledged to stop selling fossil-fuelled vehicles by 2040 on Tuesday (15 December), just as a landmark new study made the case that hydrogen should play a major role in powering heavy-duty transport in the coming years.
CNH, Daimler, DAF, Ford, MAN, Scania and Volvo signed a joint declaration with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Research this week, committing themselves to a fossil phase-out by 2040.
“Carbon-neutrality by 2050 at the latest implies that by 2040 all new commercial vehicles sold must be fossil-free. And this is a pledge that the commercial vehicle industry is making now for the first time,” the pledge reveals. ....
